I never imagined an urban garden could transform into such a welcoming and vibrant place. Thanks to the professionals at Pellegrini Giardini, our small, hidden green space—which we had almost taken for granted for years—has undergone a makeover that has completely changed its appearance and the way we experience it. Now, it’s a haven of beauty that perfectly balances tradition, modernity, and nature.

The first thing that captures attention is the new dry-laid staircase. Previously, an old, unstable tuff structure, worn by time, connected two levels of the garden. Now, with travertine steps and corten steel details outlining its edges and reinforcing the retaining walls, the staircase has become a true architectural gem. It retains the rustic charm I loved but adds an elegance and modernity that make it a striking and harmonious presence in the garden. Around the staircase, the planting of shrubs and ground covers has brought a surprising freshness. The plants seem to embrace the steps, offering a sense of softness and vitality. It’s incredible how these thoughtful plant choices have turned a previously anonymous and disorganized space into one that feels alive and lush.

Another standout feature is the flower beds, strategically arranged throughout the garden. They appear as explosions of color—a true visual feast that transforms every corner into a natural painting. Each season promises new wonders, thanks to carefully selected blooms: from warm yellows in spring to the fiery reds of summer salvias, and from autumnal tones to delicate winter blossoms. These flower beds are not just beautiful to look at but also create an ever-changing atmosphere where nature takes center stage.

In the garden’s largest section, the olive trees, once confined to an awkward corner, have been carefully relocated and replanted. This adjustment made way for the bioclimatic pergola, a structure that blends functionality with design. Its modern form integrates seamlessly with the garden, providing a pleasant shaded area on hot days and a sheltered space on cooler evenings. It has become our favorite spot for outdoor dining, relaxation, and even working from home.

The pathways and decking in natural ipe wood are another detail I particularly love. This wood, with its warm hues and smooth texture, makes strolling through the garden an almost sensory experience. Walking barefoot on it is a pleasure I’d never experienced before. The choice of natural wood pairs perfectly with the corten steel cladding on the retaining walls supporting the pergola’s base. This dialogue between different materials is the true highlight of the new design: everything seems to communicate, creating an unexpected harmony.

Our garden is no longer just a patch of greenery but a true extension of our home—a space for the entire family. Every time we look at it, we feel grateful for the beauty and serenity it brings us. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this experience, it’s that a well-designed and well-cared-for garden is never a superfluous space; it’s the heart of a living home.
