When we purchased this villa, we already had plans to renovate it from scratch, transforming it into a villa with a garden that embodied a strong modern design aesthetic. Simultaneously, we began the architectural design process alongside the planning of the vast garden spaces, relying on the expertise of professional landscape designers who worked closely with our architects, Eros Strappa and Massimo De Luca.
Together, they were able to shape it according to our needs. We wanted multiple outdoor areas, rich in various comforts, where we could relax with family after long workdays and also host important clients.
We wanted our new garden to blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and align with the characteristics of our home. The landscape architects’ project emerged from an in-depth study of the surrounding elements, dividing the space in a functional way. Browsing through magazines, we were fascinated by the minimalist style of modern gardens, as well as the New Dutch Wave style: linear, essential, and understated, yet featuring zones with a variety of perennials that provide stunning seasonal variations.
The smartest and most important choice we made, following the designers’ advice, was the thick 12-meter-tall Bamboo hedge as a perimeter fence, which simultaneously creates privacy and reduces car noise. For a perfect lawn, we opted for a pre-rolled lawn: a ready-made solution that requires minimal maintenance.
A pathway made of large stone slabs guides our guests through the different parts of the garden, enhanced by flower beds filled with colorful blooms: Solanum, Agapanthus, and Hydrangeas.
In the end, the result was the creation of four well-defined areas:
⦁ The parking area, bordered by tall hedges of evergreen shrubs, adorned with white and blue blooms like Agapanthus.
⦁ A lawn-only area, designed to accommodate outdoor furniture for every occasion—birthdays, corporate events, parties, etc.
⦁ The “zen” garden on the right side of the house, with its minimalist lines and strict appearance, was designed with a more sustainable approach, using the xeriscaping technique: sand, gravel, rocks, and no lawn, helping us conserve water, which becomes scarcer every year. The only indulgence is the beautiful Hydrangeas, which provide a stunning bloom until November. Even these are irrigated using a drip system to manage our water resources efficiently.
⦁ The modern seating area, surrounded by a flowering garden, was custom-designed and built with careful consideration by the architects and landscape designers, based on the spaces we wanted for ourselves and our guests. It’s enhanced by a beautiful water wall that, together with the seating, is illuminated by LED lines at night. This architectural feature is visually striking and creates an additional sound barrier against road noise. We can enjoy the view of this stunning scene, framed by two Magnolias that offer a spectacular bloom in spring.
In summer, we love sitting with our guests for an aperitif or after-dinner drinks, enjoying good music.
